Trust by Doc McIntyre

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

Many new managers are baffled by the initial resistance they get from their teams. “I just got here and I’m obviously trying to help, so why the pushback?”

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

Because they don’t trust you!

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

Most people’s default setting is distrust, not trust. We’re wired that way, or we’ve been burned before, so we’re cautious.

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

New managers build trust by…

  • Listening more and talking less

  • Acknowledging the experience and skill on the team

  • Getting to know people personally

  • Following through on commitments

Trust is earned, not given.

Know Your Audience: Ditch the Buzzwords

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from years of leading and consulting in the manufacturing world, it’s this: You have to know your audience. And I’m not talking about knowing their job titles or how long they’ve been with the company. I’m talking about really understanding what makes them tick, what keeps them up at night, and most importantly, what language they speak.

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

Stop Talking Buzzwords

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

Now, let’s get something straight. We all know the corporate world loves its buzzwords. Synergy, paradigm shift, low-hanging fruit—sound familiar? But here’s the thing: these words are empty calories in your communication diet. They might make you feel smart, but they’re not nourishing anyone else. The people on your shop floor or in your boardroom don’t want to hear fancy jargon. They want clear, actionable insights that they can put into practice today.

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

Speak Their Language

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

So, how do you do that? Simple—speak their language. If you’re talking to the folks who are on the ground making things happen, skip the MBA lingo. Instead, focus on what matters to them: safety, efficiency, quality. They don’t care about "optimizing synergies." They care about getting home safe, hitting production goals, and making sure the product is top-notch.

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

On the flip side, if you’re talking to executives, they’re looking at the bigger picture. They want to know how your ideas will impact the bottom line. But even then, clarity is key. No one wants to sift through a mess of buzzwords to figure out what you’re really saying.

The Power of Direct Communication

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

When you drop the buzzwords and get straight to the point, you build trust. People know where you stand, and they know what you’re asking of them. That’s how you create a culture where everyone is aligned and moving in the same direction.

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

And that, my friends, is how you build a kick-ass culture.

p span[style*=”font-size”] { line-height: 1.6; }

Remember, it’s not about showing off how much you know. It’s about connecting with your audience and moving the needle forward, together.

Until next time, keep it simple, keep it real, and keep getting sh!t done!
