Position Overview:

The Controls and Automation Technician is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining automated equipment, including control systems and sensors. This role supports safe, efficient, and reliable operations through preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and continuous improvement of automation systems.

The position requires strong technical expertise in PLCs, HMIs, and industrial control systems, along with the ability to work collaboratively across production and maintenance teams in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, test, and maintain production equipment, PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and other automation and control components
  • Diagnose and repair issues with PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servo motors, sensors, and other electronic systems
  • Perform root cause analysis to identify failures, implement corrective actions, and prevent recurrence
  • Evaluate repair versus replacement options and clearly communicate recommendations
  • Identify and source alternative components when original parts become obsolete, ensuring compatibility and functionality
  • Perform preventive maintenance on automated systems and equipment
  • Support scheduled maintenance during production downtime and TPM outages
  • Document maintenance activities, repairs, part replacements, and software or system changes
  • Respond to emergency and unscheduled equipment issues as needed
  • Coordinate with contractors, obtain quotes, and oversee onsite contractor work
  • Read and interpret schematics, manuals, diagrams, and work orders to perform required tasks
  • Identify and report abnormal conditions, taking immediate action when safety is at risk
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas in accordance with 5S standards
  • Collaborate with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams to support daily production needs
  • Perform tasks independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team

Requirements:

  • 4+ years of experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or commercial environment with strong electrical, controls, and automation experience
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting PLC-controlled systems
  • Familiarity with PLC programming languages such as ladder logic, function block diagrams, and structured text
  • Knowledge of industrial networking protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, IO-Link)
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs unassisted
  • Ability to stand for long periods and perform frequent bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling
  • Strong communication skills (verbal, written, and electronic) across all levels of the organization
  • Basic understanding of math
  • High school diploma or GED required; completion of a craft apprenticeship or equivalent experience preferred
  • Ability to follow direction and work within established procedures
  • Ability to work 2nd Shift Hours (2:30P.M.-11:30 P.M.) 
  • Willingness to work occasional Saturdays and adjust schedule as needed to support operations
  • Flexibility to adjust break and lunch schedules based on production needs
  • Background and Drug Test will be required

Preferred Skills:

  • ISA Control System Technician (CST) or Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) certification
  • ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP) certification
  • Experience with Rockwell, Allen-Bradley, or Siemens systems
  • Proficiency with CAD or drafting software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks)
  • Pneumatic and/or hydraulic certifications
  • Welding experience (TIG, MIG, and stick)
  • Journeyman Electrician experience
